Blue Spruce - Colorado blue spruce trees have silvery-blue needles that are prickly to the touch and aromatic. The pyramidal shape of Colorado  blue spruce makes them the classic choice. They thrive in a variety of soils and prefer full to partial sun. They can be planted in rows to form windbreaks, but are equally effective as specimen trees. Colorado blue spruce trees are valuable in deer country, as their prickly texture and strong aroma render them conveniently deer-resistant. In the snowy north, where landscapes can look barren in winter, evergreens such as Colorado blue spruce trees can provide much needed winter interest. Serbian Spruce - Serbian spruce is an exceptional conifer worthy of planting anywhere. It is very hardy, especially in the Midwest where limestone-based soils are abundant. The upswept branch habit at the tips allows the silvery white undersides of the needles to be seen, creating a two-toned color effect in the landscape. Canadian Hemlock - Canadian hemlock are pyramidal or conical in shape and their small needles give them a fine texture. The needles are dark green on top and light green underneath. They often serve as specimen plants or as privacy screens. Two virtues of Canadian hemlock trees are that they are shade tolerant and make relatively little mess. Black Hills Spruce - Black hills spruce is an ornamental evergreen with dark green to bluish needles. They are very dense, conical in shape, and ideal in windbreaks or screens. Slow growing at 1 foot per year, they are very resistant to wind and winter injury. Black hills spruce are considered to be among the hardiest of evergreens and prefer full to partial sun. Concolor Fir - The concolor fir is a very attractive tree with a medium greenish blue color. It has soft needles about 1-2 inches long, and produces a pleasant aroma. Concolor fir trees tolerate a wide variety of soils, and thrive in full sun to partial shade. They are commonly used as specimen trees because of their exceptional foliage and beautiful color.
